The Chum Line February/March 2009
Welcome to the February/March 2010 edition of the Chum Line. In this edition we give an update on:
Offshore fishing action; and Club news and events.
Offshore Fishing Report
It's almost impossible to imagine what the offshore fishing scene is like right now because we can't seem to catch a break with the weather. Very few boats are venturing out wide due to the high winds and even higher seas. It's a rare thing to find a day when the sun is shining, the winds are light and the seas relatively flat.
Earlier this month James Robinson ventured out on Wound Up and managed to fill the boat with Wahoo so we know there are fish to be caught.
The weather has reduced some club members to living vicariously through fishing websites like Bloody Decks or waiting for friends living in warmer climes to send photos of summer fishing in the Southern Hemisphere, like this Shortbill Spearfish caught down in New Zealand.
The weather also kept most club members from attending the Miami Boat Show in mid-February. We had planned to devote a section of this month's report to the boat show ....but the weather and cancelled flights to Miami put an end to that!
Despite all the gloom associated with the current winter that won't seem to end, there is some light at the end of the tunnel. The days are certainly getting longer and the winds seem to have abated a bit, so as we move into March there is the promise of some better fishing weather ahead.
Club New and Events
The first club function for 2010 was held on Wednesday 17th of February at the RHADC. Those club members present enjoyed an entertaining DVD on how to successfully catch and release a marlin from a jet ski! The angler was Matt Watson, a well known (in New Zealand at least!) Kiwi fisherman. More about Matt's fishing exploits can be found on-line by following this link www.theultimatefishingshow.com.
We also had two new prospective club members (Kip and Adrian) attend that function which was great to see.
The general consensus at the end of the function was that catching a marlin from a jet ski is definitely a "do not try this at home" event!
On other club related news, the Club's Annual General Meeting is scheduled for the 17th of March. If you are interested in being involved in the administration of the Club as part of the Executive please let Fiona Beck, our Club Secretary know (fiona.beck@sccn.bm).
Our annual prize giving will be held on Friday 9th of April at the RHADC. Fiona will be sending out an email with further details in the next few weeks.
Planning for the ILTT is now well advanced. We expect to have 5 or 6 teams for 2010 and, as long as the weather and fish cooperate, we expect to have another great tournament. The dates for the 2010 tournament are June 6th to June 12th. If you are interested in putting together a team or being part of an existing team then please let either Fiona Beck or Cindi Pearman know (cindipops@ibl.bm).
Club Catch Records
Once the weather settles and you can get out on the water, remember to email Francis Patterson with your catches as they come to hand. Francis needs to know the species, the line class, and the weight of the fish, the date and the boat on which the fish was caught, along with any method of catch (fly, spincast or spinchum) other than conventional. Francis' email is fhpp@northrock.bm.
Contacting the Club
Contact the Club by email at bermudaanglersclub@bermuda.com.
And finally if you think catching a marlin on a jet ski is crazy... try a surfboard. And yes, it is that mad Kiwi Matt Watson again!
