The Chum Line August 2010
Welcome to the August 2010 edition of the Chum Line... our first since the April/May edition!
In this edition we give an update on:
- Offshore fishing action; and
- Club news and events.
There is plenty to report on the offshore front.
Three grander marlin have been landed - two by visiting boats which both weighed 1005lbs and one by Captain Kevin Winter on Playmate. Playmate's fish went 1012lbs. It's a tremendous capture. Kevin's intention was to release the fish but it died at the boat and so was brought aboard. Interestingly all three of the grander marlin were caught outside the tournament circuit.
Anglers in the July billfish tournaments enjoyed some great fishing. Between the three major tournaments - the Billfish Blast, the Big Game Classic and the Sea Horse Anglers Club tournament - 188 billfish were caught. Blue Marlin made up 139 of the billfish, 48 were White Marlin with 1 Spearfish landed too. There were only 7 Blue Marlin weighed across those three tournaments, with the remaining 132 Blue Marlin released.
Some nice Yellowfin Tuna have been landed too. Live robins appear to be working well. The Yellowfins have been moving around a bit - some weeks they are firing down on Argus while other weeks they seem to like SE Challenger.
One summer time pursuit to keep in mind is to take some youngsters out on the water to get them participating in our sport. That's exactly what Club Members David Lines Snr and David Lines Jnr did. They had their grandsons/ sons and cousins enjoying a fishing holiday. Here's David Jnr giving Noah, his youngest son, some tuition!
The Wahoo are proving to be a little elusive, though the average size does seem to be sneaking up. Club Member Joss Lines landed a nice 51lb Wahoo recently - that is a very credible size at this time of the year.
There are plenty of bottom fish to be had at this time of year, as well as other species too, like Rainbow Runners and the occasional Dolphin. Barracudas can make life difficult for anglers once the chumming begins. It generally does not take the 'Cuda long to find the hooked fish. Here's a Mackerel that met with an untimely demise courtesy of a 'Cuda!
Club New and Events
The ILTT is now over for another year. The 2010 tournament was marked by a distinct lack of fish of any size. While a few nice sized specimens came to the scale, anglers generally had to work hard for their catches. For those of you who did not keep up with the results the final team placings were as follows:
- Championship Team
- Bermuda Anglers Club
- Second Place Team
- Two DW Squared
- Third Place Team
- Goombay Hookers
First time competitor, Eric Hershberg fishing for BAC, came away with the Overall High Point Rod prize which was a very nice timepiece courtesy of Crisson Jewellers.
Your Club's annual tournament was won by Mark Henneberger. This year Mark's boat did not face much competition from other club boats. We need a few more of us competing in the tournament to keep Mark honest!
Those Club Members who attended our most recent club meeting at the RHADC enjoyed some great tuna fishing and spearfishing video footage courtesy of Danny Fox. Danny had taken some visiting anglers and spearos down to Argus Tower for a little hook and line fishing followed by some spear fishing. The video footage was amazing. The amount of marine life down on the Tower is breathtaking.
Our next club meeting is scheduled for 18 August at the RHADC as usual.
Club Catch Records
Over summer months, remember to email Francis Patterson with your catches as they come to hand. Francis needs to know the species, the line class, and the weight of the fish, the date and the boat on which the fish was caught, along with any method of catch. Francis' email is fhpp@northrock.bm.
Contacting the Club
Contact the Club by email at bermudaanglersclub@bermuda.com.
In the meantime... get out wide and catch 'em up! These two young blokes did and they are still recovering!
