The Chum Line November 2009

Welcome to the November edition of the Chum Line.

In this edition we give an update on:

  • Offshore fishing action; and
  • Club news and events.

Offshore Fishing Report

Many anglers start to pack away their rods and reels once summer has left and those that do are missing out on some great fishing over the fall and winter months here in Bermuda.

Boats that have been making the trip out to Challenger have reported good catches of Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, some hefty Blackfin Tuna as well as Rainbow Runners and Bonitas. Some Dolphin have been landed too. And occasionally a Blue Marlin has decided to eat a garfish running on the downrigger.

The Wahoo seem to be running bigger and heftier than the versions we saw a few months back, which is consistent with Wahoo fishing in November.

Some anglers are finding the Wahoo are making short work of any jigs that come their way. Club member Dean Rea recently went through six Butterfly jigs in about eight drops, despite re-rigging with some wire ahead of the jig after the toothy Wahoo had accounted for two jigs in quick succession. A day or two later Club member Bobby Rego had a Wahoo hit his jig so hard it looked like the jig had been struck with an axe blade! Regrettably that fish was lost when it bit through one of the assist hooks - but the jig survived to fight another day.

David Lines and friends aboard PlaymateCaptain Kevin Winter has been putting clients on plenty of fish over recent weeks. Take a look at the haul that Club member David Lines and friends put together fishing aboard Playmate a few weeks back.

On the right day the Edge is fishing pretty well with 'the Short Course' and 'Sally Tuckers' being good locations to try your luck depending on which way the current is running. Successfully keeping away from the Barracuda is a different matter!

Club Events

On 28th of October Crayton Greene hosted the monthly Club meeting at the RHADC. Those present got the chance to see some great DVD footage of fishing at Tropic Star Lodge in Panama and the opportunity to discuss the costs and logistics of fishing at that destination.

The monthly Club meetings are now quite well attended after slim pickings over the winter months earlier this year. It is good to see so many Club members making the effort to attend. Let's keep that up!

Club members Danny Fox and Bobby Rego have recently departed for their annual trip to Cabo to compete in the IGFA Offshore World Championship held between 8th and 13th of November. The event was originally scheduled for May but had to be postponed because of the swine flu outbreak impacting Mexico at the time. We wish Danny and Bobby the best of luck down there.

Make a note in your diary for Club Christmas function. That has been scheduled for Friday 27 November at Mad Hatters restaurant. It will be a 7.00pm start. Our Club Secretary will be circulating a reminder via email a little closer to the date.

Club Catch Records

Finally remember to email Francis Patterson with your catches as they come to hand in the lead up to Xmas. Francis needs to know the species, the line class, and the weight of the fish, the date and the boat on which the fish was caught, along with any method of catch (fly, spincast or spinchum) other than conventional. Francis' email is fhpp@northrock.bm.
