The Chum Line May 2009

Welcome to the May edition of the Chum Line.

In this edition we give an update on:

  • fishing action so far in May;
  • the recent Club Prize Giving; and
  • the ILTT, which is scheduled to kick off next month.

May Fishing Report

After April's strong Wahoo bite it appears the Wahoo fishing has slowed somewhat.

Captain Keith tells us the Wahoo have been a bit tough to find of late. That said some good catches are still possible when you locate schools of bait. Playmate recently went seven for nine on Wahoo with the largest of the catch tipping the scales at 55lb. Nice fish!

Other anglers report increased success with jigs when drifting over bait schools and while at anchor. This month jigging has accounted for respectable numbers of Blackfin Tuna and Almaco Jacks. And anglers have also been reporting that a Dolphin or two has been showing up in catches as the month of May progresses.

The water temperature is now into the 70s and it won't be long before White and Blue Marlin will become a regular feature of the fishing scene. In late April Andrew Marshall hooked a nice blue on Wahoo gear while fishing solo out on the Edge. Regrettably the fight ended prematurely when the hooks pulled. But it goes to show you can never tell how your fishing day is going to end up.

The Bermuda Fishing Clubs Annual Tournament (BFCAT) was fished in very good weather conditions on Sunday 3 May. A full write up of the tournament can be found in the Mid Ocean News by following this link.

It looks like the BAC prevailed again in the BFCAT. More detail on the BFCAT results will be provided once our Club Secretary returns from business travel away from the Island!

Club Events

The Club Prize Giving was held at Mad Hatters restaurant on Saturday 18 April. The evening was a great success. It was tremendous to see junior anglers featuring in the prizes along with some of the Club's most experienced fisherman.

The next club night is scheduled for Wednesday 20 May with the venue and time to be confirmed by email in the next few days.

ILTT Update

As you would expect planning for the Club's flagship tournament, the ILTT is now well advanced.

The tournament will be contested by teams from the Bermuda Anglers Club, the Seahorse Anglers Club, as well as by The Double Down Byes (club members David Lines, Brian Lines and Dean Rea), and visiting teams the Goombay Hookers and Foxy and the Stiff Rods (featuring our own Danny Fox!).

The ILTT fishing days are scheduled for 15th, 16th 18th and 19th of June. Make sure you come down to the Spanish Point Boat Club to see the weigh in at the end of each day's fishing!

Club Catch Records

Finally remember to email Francis Patterson with your catches as they come to hand over the summer months. Francis needs to know the species, the line class, and the weight of the fish, the date and the boat on which the fish was caught, along with any method of catch (fly, spincast or spinchum) other than conventional. Francis' email is fhpp@northrock.bm.
