The Chum Line August 2009
Welcome to the August edition of the Chum Line. In this edition we give an update on:
- fishing action; and
- Club events.
July/August Fishing Report
The summertime blues have finally started... both in respect of Blue Marlin turning up and the summertime heat and humidity that can make a day offshore a pretty sticky affair.
The marlin bite seems to have waxed and waned a bit with some days being a little on the quiet side. This year there appear to be plenty of White Marlin around and some nice sized specimens too.
The seaweed that has turned up has made marlin trolling a bit difficult. There have been some days the seaweed has been so thick you could have walked on it if you wanted to get from Sally Tuckers to Challenger!
The Yellowfin Tuna that were resident on NW Challenger seem to have migrated to other parts of the bank. Club boat CS Endeavour had a great day in July on NW Challenger with some great tuna being landed and plenty being released too.
Some good sized Yellowfin Tuna have been also caught down the back side of Argus. Playmate has had some very nice fish down there from time to time. Non-club boat Notorious had a great day down at Argus in early August with a selection of school sized Yellowfin and Blackfin Tunas, Dolphin and Almaco Jacks coming aboard. The fish were all taken on the drift in 40-60 fathoms of water.
Jigs seem to have been especially effective on the Almaco Jacks. A tip worth remembering is to change the jig when the bite slows. The fish seem to get wise to a certain jig color and then the bite turns off. Keep them guessing with a change in offering!
Some chunky Blackfin Tuna have been taken by Club members... but watch out for the sharks... they have a nasty habit of honing in on a hooked Blackfin Tuna leaving the angler with rather less than he or she bargained for.
The Wahoo are still very much around but the bite can be difficult to predict. Sometimes Wahoo will only seem to grab a mono rig and shun anything with wire in it. Not every Wahoo is a monster right now... but if you scale down your tackle you can still have some great fun on the smaller specimens. And just when you do that a nice 60 pounder is sure to show up! Club Boat Island Time had great fun live baiting robins on SE Challenger in late July... but only coming back with three Wahoo from ten bites. Back to school for the Island Time team!
Club Events
The next Club night is scheduled for Wednesday 19 August at 7.30pm. The venue will be the RHADC. Richard Lee has organized something special for those members that come along - so make sure to mark that date in your diary now.
Also this month there are two Club fun tournaments - one of the 9th of August and the other on the 23rd of August. Remember guests are eligible to compete in these fun tournaments - so pack your house guests in the boat when you load up with chum, ice and rods and get out wide!
Club Catch Records
Finally remember to email Francis Patterson with your catches as they come to hand over the summer months. Francis needs to know the species, the line class, and the weight of the fish, the date and the boat on which the fish was caught, along with any method of catch (fly, spincast or spinchum) other than conventional. Francis' email is fhpp@northrock.bm.
